The Lightning Bride by D.M. Sonntag6/12/2023 It was short but sufficiently covered all that I would want a backstory novella to cover. Emilia is Maylie's mother, and in The Mermaid's Shadow, you learn about Emilia from a young lady to becoming Malie's mother. In The Mermaid's Shadow, you learn about Maylie's back story, specifically her mother's story. This novella is meant to be read after The Lightning Bride, which focuses on Maylie. All in all, a short story that you can devour in a day and that'll give you a bit more depth (bit of an oceanic pun there) of the world of the Kingdom Isles series! Sonntag really gets you swept up in her nautical world and the characters and dialogue are both intriguing and easy to follow. I'd been wanting to read this for a while after finishing The Lightning Bride, so the discovery it was available in paperback was a welcome one! A prequel that takes place about thirty years before the events of the Lightning Bride, The Mermaid's Shadow tells the story of Emilia and Madeaus, mother and father of the Lightning Bride's heroine, Maylie: how their paths crossed, how they came to be man and wife and trying to make a life for themselves as they deal with piratical marauders, a psychotic mermaid with a grudge and unexpected tragedy.Ī little short and sweet, and the description is a bit too sparse for me, but I'll overlook that because it was really satisfying to go back to the Kingdom Isles, and I loved seeing familiar faces from The Lightning Bride, even if they're a bit younger than the last time I read about them!
